INFORMATION LITERACY ( Sixth Week Reflection )

                             "SIXTH WEEK

                              REFLECTION"

“Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand”

The week has gone and we started with week six. As week six was a bit boring for me because, I had so many assignments and I had two mid-term exams. During week six when I entered to class I was feeling very boring and sad. When the lecturer entered to class we welcomed her and we said Good Afternoon to her. Then, the lecturer started to ask some questions about our previous lesson the aim of our lecturer was just to evaluate us that, whether we understand or no. Yet, all the students were able to answer the questions. After that, we started with our lesson. Week six was all about Search Strategies Basics. First of all we started with week six session 1. In session 1 we studied Truncation and Wildcards. Furthermore, the lecture gave us some information about Truncation and Wildcards.

Moreover, by studying this lesson I learned that, Truncation and wildcards broaden your search capabilities by allowing you to retrieve multiple spellings of a root word or word stem, such as singular and plural forms. A wildcard is a special character, such as an asterisk (*), question mark (?), or pound sign (#), that replaces one or more letters in a word. Example of Truncation: truncation expands the search to locate all words beginning with the same root. Example: teen* will return teen, teens, teenage, teenagers, etc……. Example of Wildcard: A wildcard is used in the middle of a word to match usually known variants of term. A wildcard usually represents a single character. Example: wom?n will return woman, women and womyn.

Furthermore, we started with week six session 2 and 3. In session 2 and 3 we studied Phrase Searching. By studying this lesson I learned that, what phrase searching is all about. Phrase searching is when you use a string of words (instead of a single word) to search with. Some databases will use the brackets. We have to look at the “Help” function of each database to see what you should use for that particular database. The lecturer stressed on this point a lot that, not all the databases allow phrase searching. We have to look at the “Help” function of the database to find out.

"Periodical Searching Words And Phrase Searching"

Last but not least, it was an interesting week and I learned a lot of new things which I have not known before. I was really interested in this lesson because, I learned about searching, Truncation and Wildcards. After, studying this lesson I am fully able to find the differences between phrase searching and Boolean searching.

Sincerely,
