"FIFTH WEEK
REFLECTION"
“Tell
me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will
understand”
The week has gone and we
started with week 5. During week 5 when I entered to class I was feeling a bit
boring because, I was very sick I was suffering from flue. Yet, it was an
interesting and awesome week. Week 5 was all about Search Strategies Basics. In
the first day of class we studied Boolean Operators. Then the lecturer started
to describe that what Boolean Operator is. Boolean Operators are words that
connect a search that may add or subtract a concept to your search. Boolean
search is the most common and basic search strategy. Furthermore, the lecturer
gave us some example about Boolean Search such as:
1. By
using an AND between words you limit the search.
2. By
placing an OR between words it expends the search.
3. When
you use OR you receive more information because the search engine is looking
for two words rather than just one word.
Moreover, the lesson was so interesting and
we have learned a lot of new things which, we have not known before. Next, the
lecturer gave us a quiz during class. There were three questions in the quiz that
what are Boolean, Phrase and truncation searching then, we started to answer
the questions. After the quiz we were able to know that what are Boolean,
Phrase and Truncation searching. Furthermore, we studied Brainstorming Search
Terms. It shows us the way how to brainstorm on something. Below are some
examples which have been given by our lecturer.
1. Library
Subject Headings: Used as the “official vocabulary” of the libraries catalog as
well as many other library catalogs.
2. Science
Subject Headings: Used to describe the content of documents in the library at
AIU as well as in catalogs of other medical and health sciences libraries.
3. Thesaurus
of Psychological Index Terms: This controlled vocabulary is used by American
Psychological Association indexers to describe the content of documents in the
database. These subjects’ headings are sometimes called index terms or
descriptors. The library has copies of the printed volume and the thesaurus is
also available online, searchable from within the database.
In conclusion I can say that it was an
interesting and awesome week and we have gained and learned a lot of things.
The things which I learned in the class were very useful and significant. I am
interested and looking forward to learn more about this lesson which we studied
in week five.
