INFORMATION LITERACY ( Ninth Week Reflection )

                                                   "NINTH WEEK

                                            REFLECTION"

“Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand”

Week eight has finished and we started with week 9. OMG!!! Week 9 for me was a stressful week because we had a lot of assignments to be submitted by this Friday. Alhamdulillah I still managed to finish all my assignments. Anyhow, during week 9 we were introduced to Information Analysis. Information Analysis is the ability to discover and quantify patterns in data of any kind, including numbers, symbols, text, sound and image. The relevant techniques include statistical and data mining or machine learning methods such as rule induction, artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms and automated prĂ©cis systems. After that, we were introduced to Evaluation of Internet Sources. The availability and growth of the Internet offers all of us, the opportunity to find information and data from all over the world. Internet resources, in particular World Wide Web resources, continue to proliferate at an astonishing rate. Some experts say that a new site is placed online every 3 seconds!!It is possible for almost anyone to place anything on the Internet.

Moreover, we studied the Criteria for Evaluating Internet Sources. There are 7 steps to be taken when we are Evaluating Internet Sources. They are as below.
  •   Purpose
  •   Scope/Coverage/Comprehensiveness
  •   Authority
  •   Audience
  •   Information content
  •   Design and layout
  •   Access/Workability

Besides that, we had a discussion. During discussion we were given by a question the question was that what Authority is? We were discussing on this question and everyone was supposed to answer. The discussion was immensely interesting and I have learned about Authority that what Authority is all about.

WOW, the topic which I was waiting for long finally has come out, Plagiarism. Plagiarism is the act of taking another person's writing, conversation, song, or even idea and passing it off as your own. This includes information from web pages, books, songs, television shows, email messages, interviews, articles, artworks or any other medium. After studying this lesson I am fully able to understand what Plagiarism is all about. I can see most of the student they are copying their friends assignments and the give their assignments to their lecturer.

Over all, it was an interesting week but, a bit stressful and boring. Because, we had a lot of assignments and presentation. This was my last week reflection that I have added to my blog. I have tried my best on my blog and I have learned a lot of new experiences and gained a lot of knowledge. I owe great many thanks to my lecturer that she guided me and helped me a lot during my studies.

Sincerely,

INFORMATION LITERACY ( Eight Week Reflection )

                                                         "EIGHT WEEK
                                                                                                                 REFLECTION"

Week 7 has finished and week started with week 8. To be honest week 8 was for me an interesting week and I have learned and gained a lot of new things which I have not known before. We started with week 8 session 1 Citation & Documenting Information Sources. The lecturer gave us brief information about Citation & Documenting Information Sources. Firstly, we studied Documenting Online Journals. After studying this lesson I am fully able to understand how to do citation for Documenting Online Journals. Next, we had a discussion during discussion we had to response for a question the question was, How do you do the bibliography if the information that you get is from website. We all have tried our best to find the best answer for the question which has been given us during discussion. The activity was immensely interesting and i have gained some experience and learned about bibliography.

Furthermore, we studied Choosing Text to Integrate. Choosing Text to Integrate are ….
  • Read the entire text, noting the key points and main ideas.
  • Summarize in your own words what the single main idea of the essay is.
  • Paraphrase important supporting points that come up in the essay.
  • Consider any words, phrases, or brief passages that you believe should be quoted directly.

Moreover, we studied about Quoting. Quotations must be identical to the original.
Quotations use a narrow segment of the source.
They must match the source document word for word and must be attributed to the original author.
Use quotes when the actual words are so integral to the discussion that they cannot be replaced.
Use quotes when the author’s words are so precisely and accurately stated that they cannot be paraphrased.

Last but not list, we have also studied paraphrasing. Below are some tips on how to do paraphrasing.

Paraphrasing involves putting a passage from source material into your own words”
Attribute paraphrases to their original sources.
Paraphrases are usually shorter than, but may be the same length as the original passage.
Paraphrases take a more focused segment of the source and condense it slightly.

Over all, the information which I have learned in class was immensely useful and it can help me a lot in my studies. After studying these lessons I am fully able to understand that what citation is all about and how to apply that. To be honest, it was a precious week for me and I have gained and learned a lot of new things.

Sincerly,

Said Abid s/o Said Tahir

INFORMATION LITERACY ( Seventh Week Reflection)

-->

                    "SEVENTH WEEK
                   REFLECTION"

-->
“Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand”

Week six has finished and we started with week 7. To be honest, week 7 for me was an interesting week. During week 7 when I entered to class I was feeling very happy and exhilarated. When the lecturer came into the class we welcomed her and we said Good Morning to her. The lecturer started to great us. After greeting, she started to ask some questions about our previous lesson that whether, we understood or no. Some of the students answered all the questions and some of them had some problems. Furthermore, we started with week 7session 1. During week 7 we studied CITATION & DOCUMENTING INFORMATION SOURCES. First of all we studied that what APA Style is and Why Use It? APA is an American Psychological Association. The APA (American Psychological Association) style has been established in 1928 by Social Science professionals. The Style provides guidelines for publication in Social Science Journals (such as Psychology, Sociology, Education, and Nursing). Furthermore, The Style lends consistency and makes texts more readable by those who assess or publish them.

Moreover, we studied Documenting Authors. By learning this lesson will help us when we do APA report. When we do APA report we have to know the citation for one author, two authors, three authors, four authors and so no. after that, we have studied Rules for the Title. Below are the rules for the Title.

  • ·         Capitalize only the first alphabet word or name in the Title and subtitle.
  • ·         Capitalize each alphabet in each word in the Title of journal except for preposition.
  • ·         Underline, bold or italic the Title and the Title of Journal.

Next, the lecturer taught us on how to do Citation for book with one, two, three and six author, Corporate Bodies as Authors, More than First Edition, Edited Books, Chapter From Books, Journal Article, Newspaper Article, Published Conference Paper, Unpublished Conference Paper, Thesis / Dissertation, Journal Article Through Internet, Journal Article Using Database and lastly On CD-ROM. After that, we had an activity it was like a kind of assessment. The lecturer wrote some example on the board and she said that I will call upon a name he/she will come and will do the citation for this example. The activity was very useful and we learned some practical examples of Citation.
Last but not list, on the last day of week 7 we had a lab session. Again the lecturer taught us about citation. After all, we got an assignment the assignment is about APA report which carries 10% of the marks.
Overall, it was an interesting week and I have learned and gained a lot of new things which I have not known before, APA citation not only helps me in my foundation studies It can  also help me in my UGP (under graduate studies). To be honest, I was immensely interested in this lesson and I am looking forward to learn more about this topic.

Sincerely,
